Moli a day…

At the beginning of this year I decided to embark on a photographic project that would involve me taking a photograph a day and publishing them of Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The first two social media formats are for public consumption and with the right hash tags I can be sure that they get to the right audience that might actually enjoy them. Now, I use the word photograph and not picture for a particular reason. Snaps and Pics in my view are images that anyone can take of anything and often represent little more than the capturing in an instant of what is in front of the viewer. It is in essence what the world looks like at that time and place. Nothing wrong in that and I’ve taken a fair few of those pictures over the years. However, a photograph for a photographer is the capture of the world how the photographer or I see it and wants others to see it. The image can tell a story or highlight an object or character. It isn’t necessarily even the truth but it is an art that communicates a reality I want to project to the world as the photographer. Was that too deep?

The challenge I set myself has a couple of self-imposed rules. I need to take a photograph a day for year and I can only feature once in any of the 365 images. Simple really? Not really! I find myself looking around wherever I go, like a lost tourist, hoping to find that magic photograph and the reality is the daily commute is becoming fairly used up for great shots and I’ve still got a long way to go but I’m over 50 images in so far and I’m enjoying the challenge. Some places are duller than others and my inspiration on a Monday morning can sometimes be lacking. I’m finding that some people have followed me from day one and some groups and companies have started following me too.

Many of the photographs are taken and edited on my iPhone 6 which I feel demonstrates that you don’t need to have an expensive camera to take interesting images. I think it just needs thought, patience and a dash of creativity.

Hear are some of the photographs I’ve taken this year so far. Please leave some comments.

Moli says goodbye to 2015…

There is one thing a new year and a new years day is good for. Reflection. I’ve spent the past few days thinking about the year that’s past and I can’t say that my thoughts are good. Actually, they are bloody awful. When I compare New Years Eve 2014 to 2015 this is most evidential. 12 months ago I was with a large group of people having the time of my life and this year I’m sat at home alone and thinking that I must be a terrible human being. How bad must I have been to have lost everything within a year? Have I learnt from my mistakes? Have I become a better person that people want to be around? I guess not as my NYE invites number zero.

Moli

I’m so glad to see the back of 2015 I’m not sure words can really convey. It was a year filled with so much pain, both physical and mental, and both of which I’m still healing from but now much improved. However, in my experience, some things in life can be fixed, some things will remain scars forever and some things will never ever be repaired. Sorry to sound cryptic but stupidly I’m still protecting those that hurt me and those that turned their back on me. I guess I’m also protecting those that did nothing for me in my darkest days. This must all sound very cryptic, self-pitying and self-absorbing but it’s my blog and if you don’t like it, fuck off. This helps me get things right in my head and when I read this back in 20 years time, I’ll remember how I felt about 2015, should I ever forget.

Logically NYE and NYD is just another day and nothing really changes. It is symbolic and numerical only. The symbolism for me marks the end of one life that could have been and the start of whatever I want my life to be but I don’t trust the universe enough to believe it won’t try to upset any well thought out plans I might have for myself. After all, 2015 didn’t go as planned and I put my heart and soul into it. Literally giving myself to the future and my soul almost dying in the process. What life is this? My spine failing me early in the year and the endless pain it left me with was beyond my ability to control and handle on a daily basis. I had to manage the pain and my recovery the best I could but the price was much higher than I could ever have imagined. It’s only upon my NYE reflection that I’ve come to think that maybe it could have saved me too from a far worse fate. A life that was false and emotionless, which is a slow death, as Shakespeare once said, ‘to thine own self be true’. It’s taken a long time for me to realise that. The year hasn’t been a complete disaster and the highlights are here for all to see in my blog. I’m proud of the adventures I finally managed to cram into the final quarter of the year. The trip to Texas and people I met along the way being a great memory but I’m also very aware of what’s not written here, the stories of the people in my world who’ve past away. With my new job I’ve made some new friends and I love working with this team. It’s re-energised me for the year ahead.

So, I wish you all a happy new year. The year ahead will find new ways to challenge us all and give us rewards too. A year of endless possibilities for both I’m sure. Wishing you all the good luck and strength you’ll need for 2016.

Moli Ships, bikes and Snails…

I’m starting to wonder if my blogging world is broken. Along with my Facebook updates I’m struggling to celebrate, lament and comment on my life. I think I know why and I need to deal with it as I really do enjoy writing my blog.

Facebook however, I’m not missing as much. It seems that its mostly videos of people popping 20 year old spots and less than inspirational memes. It’s certainly a far cry from when Facebook started out and friends shared thoughts, pictures and status updates of their own. I guess Facebook has become lazy.

So, what’s been going on with me? Some of you might be interested even if we don’t speak to each other any more or actually never met in the first place.

This year the defence show was at Excel again and as usual I took some pictures of the arrivals that included,

• Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate HMS Iron Duke
• Royal Navy River Class HMS Tyne
• Royal Navy Hunter Class MCMV HMS Hurworth
• Royal Canadian Navy Halifax Class HMCS Winnipeg
• Belgian Navy Costal Patrol Vessel BNS Castor
• German Navy K130 Class Corvette FGS Ludwigshafen
• Indian Navy Talwar Class INS Trikand
• Sea Owl Naval Training Ship VN Partisan

All of these ships have to pass through the lock next to my home and some of them sadly arrived at silly O’clock that meant I wasn’t able or willing to take any pictures. I only ventured out once to catch an arrival at 3am that turned out to be a bit of a farce as the bridge that rises to let them into Victoria dock wouldn’t open. So, not very much happened beyond me being very tired and cold.

HMS Iron Duke (F234)Having really got into cycling this year I’ve been slowly getting more and more distance as my strength and fitness improve. I’m not like those nutters that can do 150 miles before breakfast but I have managed to get to around 25 miles and I’m proud of myself as I’m mostly made of lard, unfit and with a broken spine. Don’t get me wrong, my legs afterwards are like jelly but I always feel great. Moli

Recently I did a ride from my home in the Royal Docks to Westminster and back. The route used the Greenway to Stratford, Bow to Whitechapel, Tower Bridge to Southbank. Big Ben to Embankment, Tower Hill to Canary Wharf and then back home. Along the route we did get to see Christopher Werkowicz playing a tuba which shoots out fire! Christopher Werkowicz playing a tuba which shoots out fire

I went to see a play recently called, ‘The curious case of the dog in the night-time’ at the Gielgud Theatre.

Curious incident of the dog in the night-timeIt’s a great story and the staging was very different to anything I’ve ever seen. The set was surrounded on all sides including the floor with LED lights that create movement and spaces that the performers can work within. The ticket I had came with restricted view that was fairly restricted unless I hung over the balcony in a way that didn’t feel very safe. It should have also read restricted leg room that made The Royal Court or Easyjet look like luxury. After the interval I moved to an empty seat which gave me direct views of the stage and this made things much more enjoyable. I won’t spoil it for you by telling you any of the plot but I would certainly recommend going to see this play but you really need to be careful with the seating. I would certainly argue that being higher in the theatre would give a better experience than the stalls.                   Sunset at London City Airport

I recently took this picture while walking to the station during a lovely sunset. Hope you like it?

I would love it if readers of this blog left some comments on the writing, the pictures or asked me questions. At the bottom is a little used comments section. Say something nice!

One good thing. Doctor Who is back on TV.

One bad thing, I keep stepping on snails in the dark.

Moli, dogs and trees…

I’m currently sitting in a really nice Café in Sidcup called the Walnuts while my Land Rover gets its annual service. It’s a complimentary breakfast that makes me feel good about paying dealership prices, however I’m sure it’s all in the price in the end, right? Having survived the rigors of January, the most depressing month in the year, February has been more interesting and far less depressing.

The month started with my God children’s 6th birthday party. My little darlings Harry and Emily are really growing up fast and with very distinct personalities. It really doesn’t seem that long ago that I was holding them in my arm for the first time but I guess it was 6 years ago. Blimey, where does the time go? I was asked by my friends to take some pictures of their party that I gladly agreed to do. The party was being held at Partyman world of play in Essex, which is primarily a series of pipes that children can crawl inside and slides. As this was a small persons party many of the parents attended too.

E&H Birthday-1-2

It didn’t take long for the adults to have more fun than the kids. Throwing soft balls at each other, running around and pushing children out of the way and stealing their pocket money. Okay, the last bit might be an exaggeration. It was more shoving than pushing, but the whole afternoon everyone was having a really good time and the staff were excellent hosts. I’m not sure my next birthday won’t be there.

GOING TO THE DOGS

Another birthday in February but this time it was a more adult themed event. I was invited to attend a night at Wimbledon dog track which I’ve never been to before.

Dogs

Dogs

Dogs

I’ve been to the track at Romford a few times and really enjoyed myself but I’m always struck by the amount of really shady characters that work and attend these places. I always put bets on every race and choose to do this with the old guys that have Totes near the track side. These men with long coats and flat caps that never look you in the eye and whisper to each other, dealing with them always feels a little dangerous. While trying to put a bet on a three-legged dog called Lucky Boy that was 1000/1, a man walks up to the bookie and says, “£300”. The bookie says “£200”. This exchange goes on for a while and I was starting to think both of them were hard of hearing and needed subtitles to continue but eventually the gambler was given £300 from the bookie with a final, “Is this for the boys?” “Yeah” I must say I was surprised and a little concerned about what I’d seen but didn’t feel confident enough to try it myself and just put my 50p bet on Lucky Boy to win. It didn’t! I did however manage to break even with my betting and have a great night out with friends which I think makes for an excellent evening.

TREE

Towards the end of this month I was invited to the Old Vic to see a play called Tree. I didn’t bother to find out anything about it and was intrigued to discover while waiting to collect the tickets it was a 90-minute play without an interval and a comedy. The last time I went the Old Vic was to see Patrick Stewart in his one-man play of ‘A Christmas Carol’ in 1993. This play has just two actors, so I’m doubling up my actor account. The theater seating surrounded a big tree with no other set to distract the audience and my seat was virtually on the stage with a great view of the exchange between a man waiting for someone in the park (Tim Key) and a man who lives up a tree (Daniel Kitson, Writer & Director). It was really funny and engaging with a constant stream of banter and jokes that took the audience on a journey about life, love, honesty and integrity.

Tree

I always wish that I spent more time going to the theater and I can honestly say that this play was the perfect excuse. As the exchange of perfectly timed conversation played out, I found myself doing a sort of tennis head looking up, looking down as each character spat a verbal ball at each other. Occasionally the expected return caught me off guard and I was looking at the wrong person that meant I was watching the intricate performance of someone just waiting and listening for a reply. A truly great play and well worth a getting a ticket to experience yourself.

Now, time for another coffee!

Roll on March.

Moli returns…

Hello… I’m back!!!

I was shocked to discover that my last blog entry was 2 months ago. When I think back over that period of time I realise that it’s not a lack of adventure in my life but a lack of time, focus and energy I’ve had to write, mostly caused by my job and its demands. A company ruling however stops me from saying anything about where I work and the things that I do. However, I had a very busy November and December and I’m glad now to say that I’m back.

Moli 2015

The days of 2014 were one of the best years I’ve had and its not too often that I can say that. I found love, I made new friends and I had fun. Life has a way of changing in a heartbeat and nobody is more surprised than me how quickly that can happen. I’m not pretending that I’m completely happy with my lot in life but I feel that 2014 has made moves in the right direction to get the things that I want in my life but with plenty still to do. I know that if you wanted to know what happened last year to me then you can read the pages of blog entries from last year but I wanted to share a short story from December that always brings a smile to my face since. I was having a drink with a friend while a reception for something or another was going on around us. I notice the impressionist Jon Culshaw walking past me and having the opportunity asked if he could rate my Tom Baker impression.

Jon Culshaw - Tom Baker

He agreed but before I could set off he started with, “Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow”. I then did my “Hello Harry, Hello Sarah” which is the limit of my impression. We had a little Tom baker off and then looked over to see Sir Trevor McDonald watching us. Bizarre world.

I went to my first fancy dress party in over 200 years before Christmas that I actually enjoyed. I say that because I don’t normally enjoy them and always look like someone who couldn’t be bothered and always have the worst costume despite always trying hard to look good. This party had a theme of your favorite Christmas character from a movie. A group of us decided to go as the cast of Die Hard which of course is a great Christmas film.

Christmas Party

Christmas Party

Having had a costume planned out for me, it would appear that my extra eating in the build up to Christmas meant it didn’t fit and I once again had the worst costume. All photos of me in my back up costume have been destroyed to save the eyes of innocent people but the party was great fun and that’s the most important part.

2015

I recently took a few days off work that was desperately needed and decided to be a tourist in my own city of London. For a long time I’ve wanted to tour Tower Bridge that is probably one of the best-loved and well-known symbols of London. The view from the top of the bridge gave me a unique and fascinating view across the Thames and the city beyond.

Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge Exhibition

Tower Bridge Exhibition

Tower Bridge Exhibition

Going outside of the school holiday period and in the winter allowed me the time to enjoy the history of the bridge, take in the views and to play on the new glass floor which for those with vertigo including myself was a very uneasy experience but thrilling.

Tower Bridge Exhibition

The sense of falling was overwhelming but an assistant told me that the glass was stronger than the wood that surrounding it, however it’s a shame that my mind and my Arse didn’t believe him. I really enjoyed the tour and learnt about something I see every day. It’s a great tour and well worth a visit.

That same week I took a trip to Bletchley Park that was the home of the code breakers. For those not aware of the history, during the Second World War the Germans had a coding machine called Enigma that altered communications and protected their contents from enemy eyes.

4-rotor-enigma-open-copy-BW

Breaking this code was the job of an amazing team of code breakers at Bletchley Park lead by a man called Alan Turing. He created a machine called ‘The Bome’ which broke the code and shortened the war by at least two years and saved over an estimated 15 million lives.

Bletchley-Park-Turing-Bombe

A truly remarkable story and one which Hollywood has decided to tell in the recently released film called ‘The Imitation Game.’ Having immersed myself in the subject at Bletchley I decided to watch the film in the evening. The performance of Benedict Cumberbatch was fantastic but the film lacked focus, direction and failed to really show how important the work of Turing and his team was to WW2.

Benadict Cumberbatch - Turing

It tried to cover so much of Turing’s life and work that it struggled to tell any of it well. If you want to understand the subject I recommend going to Bletchley on a warm day. Enjoy the grounds and learn from the very knowledgeable guides about the important work done there. The movie doesn’t cut it like they do.

I think that brings me up to date. Normal service resumes.

Moli and the little green bag…

Hello…

I was coming home on the train the other night after an evening out drinking with friends. I sat at one end of the train and after a few stops a young girl got onto the train and sat next to me with a Fortnum & Mason bag that contained her shoes. After 5 minutes the girl started to sink into her seat. I didn’t think too much of it until she gently removed her shoes from the green bag and promptly emptied the contents of her stomach into it. I couldn’t get further away from her as I pushed myself into the glass panel. A terrible smell started to fill the carriage and the other passenger’s nostrils began to acknowledge that things were not going too well for this girl. I honestly thought everyone was going to start throwing up but just in the nick of time she ran off the train at the next stop looking ever so drained. As the doors on the train closed, the whole train carriage began laughing and for one brief moment the anonymous travelers that never speak or make eye contact with each other started to engage each other. It didn’t last long sadly.

On my last blog I mentioned that I went to southern Germany for a 10 day driving tour. Waking up in Frankfurt for the first time we turned to Google and Google Maps to help us get around. The city is spread out and is a mixture of old and new buildings with a big financial district complete with skyscrapers. Main Tower can be accessed by the public and gave us a great view of the city like going up The Shard.

Germany 2014

Germany 2014

Sadly the Monday we arrived is when most if not all the museums and galleries are closed. So, we ended up walking the streets and walking across the Eiserner Steg Bridge which is also known as the Frankfurt Love Lock Bridge.

Germany 2014

Germany 2014

Thousands of people going back decades have declared their love for each other by placing a lock onto the bridge. The earliest lock I found was going back to the early 80’s. I wonder if the lock has lasted longer than the relationship?

We had made a sort of pledge to eat as much German food as possible and this meant eating lots of Sausages, Schnitzels and Sauerkraut. Frankfurt has a reasonably priced restaurant called Leib und Seele. The beers were large and the mushroom Schnitzel was fantastic. The only bad part was the poor service but I really didn’t care that much as I was fairly drunk from drinking a couple of big Steins of beer.

The next morning we got ourselves over to the main train station where we pick up our hire car. Now, this should have been a painless and straightforward process. However, AVIS didn’t want to do this and made it the most frustrating and uncomfortable experience possible. I’d organised the hire car well before we left and was of the understanding that the damage waiver that we’d bought meant that in the event of any damage to the car we’d not have any excess to pay. Can you imagine how shocked I was when I was told that we only had an 800€ excess to pay instead of giving them my kidney should the car get a scratch. However we could pay for a second and higher level damage waiver that would mean we had no excess to pay. The android behind the counter didn’t seem to understand how we were now feeling conned and to add insult to injury the car we wanted wasn’t available but we could upgrade from a tandem bike to a luxury car for an additional fee. Our driving trip was now getting more and more expensive and we’d not driven anywhere. We really had no choice but to pay up and get our Infinity Q50 which was a very nice car but the whole experience with AVIS had made me feel sick. Pass the Fortnum’s bag please.

Next stop. Heidelberg.

Moli & Monty…

I never wanted to write a blog… I wanted to be…. A Lumberjack!!! Oh, I’m a lumberjack, and I’m okay, I sleep all night and I work all day…

Monty Python - London

Monty Lumberjack Song

Earlier this month I attended one of the live Monty Python shows at the O2 in London. The last live show was in 1982 at the Hollywood Bowl and the TV series itself ended in 1974 so I was fairly excited to say the least to be able to see my comedy heroes that I grew up watching.

Moli Monty

The show featured every sketch I loved watching with classic footage and animations from the original series. It also featured the songs from the movies with a very camp and show tune version of ‘Every Sperm is Sacred’ with giant penises for extra emphasis. The two sketches I wanted so see, The ‘Dead Parrot Sketch being one of my favorites and ‘The right room for an Argument’ didn’t disappoint. However it was clear that John Cleese seemed to be the most doddery and less able to be as physical. Eric Idle on the other hand seemed to have more energy than them all put together.

Monty Sperm Song

The whole evening felt like a night at the Proms or at a Pantomime. The 20,000 or so audience were singing along to all the songs and joining in with the show.

Monty Python - London

I can understand why some critics found it boring but you don’t go the Proms looking for something new and original. You want to see the classic sketches performed live and given that its been over 30 years since the last time and probably the last time they will all be together again, I couldn’t have had a better time.

Monty Python - London

As the curtain came down and a final song of ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ was performed I felt sad that I’ll never see them all together again but happy that I did.

Moli goes to Utopia…

Last year Channel 4 broadcast a dark conspiracy drama called Utopia. It was beautifully shot and graded with striking colours. The characters and story were very original and very violent with a few look away moments. I’m excited that next week see’s the return of Utopia with two episodes over consecutive nights from Monday 14th July.

Utopia Season 2

However, I was lucky enough to attend a screening of these episodes a few weeks ago with some of the cast in attendance and unlike some shows that lose something from season one to season two. These first two episodes of Utopia were nothing less than business as usual but the first episode was set in the 1970’s with period grading and 4:3 aspect ratio that matched the use of stock news footage from the time. It sets up the events that ultimately lead to storyline of Utopia season one without me giving away any spoilers. The second episode then continues season two with some more shocks and surprises.

Utopia - Season 2

The subsequent Q&A afterwards offered a fairly limited insight into the creation of the show by writer Dennis Kelly.

Utopia Season 2 Screening

One of the more famous lines from season one was a question from the character called Arby played by Neil Maskel. The question goes, “Where is Jessica Hyde?”

Now that might not mean very much to those that haven’t seen the show, however I think this is a cool photo. So… Here is Jessica Hyde…

Fiona O'Shaughnessy & Moli (Jessica Hyde, Utopia)

I really recommend that you try and catch the first series. If you don’t Arby might get you…

Moli goes on holiday and gets a fan club…

I think its time that I did an update to the blog. I’ve been busy having fun and that’s a good enough excuse I guess to be lazy and not write the blog. I really want to write weekly or twice a month. Anyway after Easter I decided that I really needed a short break out of the UK as the weather is fairly unpredictable and looking at the costs of UK based hotels, it was clearly cheaper to go abroad. Having visited Tenerife at the start of the year I was keen to try somewhere new with some guaranteed sunshine. I ended up going into Thomas Cook to book it and was offered some lovely places that interested me. However, the flight times going out and coming back at 3am and 6am would destroy any rest I aimed to achieve. It’s crazy that airlines actually have these as an option for holidaymakers. I really can’t understand why people would do it and I certainly wouldn’t, So, I decided to have a rethink and choose the holiday destination based on decent flight times. Well, the only one available was traveling to Tenerife again, so not an ideal solution as I wasn’t that keen to make a return trip so soon but I did enjoy my last trip. I reluctantly agreed on the destination and book the agents recommended hotel called the Blue Sea Interpalace. This was billed as a 4 star hotel. So, I paid my money and got excited about the trip.

After a good flight on Easyjet and chatting the cabin crew at the back of the plane abut the latest Galley FM which is all the tales and gossip of cabin crew the 4 hour flight passed very quickly. The stories were very funny and mostly involved which crewmember was shagging who and how rude most of the customers can be. Once we landed I had a 1 hour coach trip to the north of the island and my hotel. So, after 5 hours traveling from Gatwick I arrived at the Blue Sea Interpalace hotel and was presented with two Spanish reception staff. Now I was hoping for a “Hello” or “Hola” and a smile but I was sadly out of luck. I was however, ignored for 5 minutes while they chatted to each other and looked glum about life in general. Which they did acknowledge my existence it was almost as an inconvenience. Checking in with the world’s most unfriendly human was fortunately quick and I was offered a room on the 3rd floor. The room was tiny and next to a busy and noisy road. Bikes, cars and people seemed ridiculously loud and sleep was impossible. Sitting in bed I was getting more and more angry. I discussed my feeling with the 10,000 ants that were sharing my room that night. They seemed happy about the state of things and offered no real help. The next morning, having not really slept, I spoke to a new and slightly less unhappy man on reception about changing rooms. He said yes and asked “would I like a top floor room with a sea view?” I looked at him for a moment and replied, “Errrr…. Yeah” So I moved and got a much better view and less ants.
Tenerife

Finally I could relax but this was clearly not a 4 star hotel and I would be generous saying it was 2 stars with is worn out carpets and very average food and frankly awful nightly entertainment. The weather was my main reason for going and I had plenty of sunshine to keep me happy. I had some of the free beer that was like water and simply couldn’t have actually contained any alcohol. So, I mostly drank real water and played the games that were on offer.

Untitled

This for me was the highlight of the trip. A rep would walk around the pool area and call out the name of the game about to be played. First up was shooting which I loved doing and was actually fairly good at. The hotel was mostly populated by German OAP’s but one of them was to become my nemesis or my arch enemy. Eddie was actually a resident at the hotel and played the games every day and had become quite good at them. Eddie was a loud man and a bloody know all that kept beating me at all the games, normally ending with a “Yar” Some of the games I’d never seen or played before like a Dutch game called Sjoelbak. It was played with wooden discs and all the other OAP’s had over the course of the week become my fan club, all of them willing me to beat Eddie. I had become their champion and with their backing I focused on the game in hand and with a little bit of luck I managed to beat Eddie with much applause from my new fan club and to much frowning from Eddie. Take that!!!
TenerifeOn the only cloudy day I took a walk up to the botanical gardens which was a very relaxing place to sit and enjoy all the colours.
Tenerife

In the end I was able to have a relaxing break but I honestly couldn’t wait to come home and get back into my own bed and a decent cup of tea. I learnt that Thomas Cook have no idea of star ratings. German OAP’s are really good at unknown European games and you are never too old to have a fan club.
