New order…

On Saturday night I had the chance to see New Order live at The Troxy in East London.

Having been a fan of their music for some time I was happy that Fleur managed to get tickets at the last minute. They cost a small fortune for two small booth seats in the upper circle of a venue thats not changed that much in 40 years. Or so it would seem. The cost of a small bottle of beer was extremely expensive at £3.50 and the food was limited to a semi cold cheese and ham Panini. It was clear early on that I wasn’t going to get drunk or free hunger that night and my focus was on the support act of Jake Evens and New Order of course.

I felt that the sound heard was more volume over quality with the words and music overpowering each other to the point of just being a very loud noise. Blue Monday and True Faith were supported by their music video images and a really impressive light show. Hearing these tracks live was a great experience and the crowd went wild. However, the poor sound was just too much for me to really enjoy it fully. This didn’t seem to dampen the crowds enthusiasm for the nights entertainment and maybe I’m just a boring old man? Fleur loved it and for me thats all the really matters. Now where are my slippers and pipe???

Doctor Who episode found…

Two classic episodes of Doctor Who – thought to be missing forever – have been returned to the BBC archive. Episode 3 of Galaxy 4 (starring William Hartnell) and Episode 2 of The Underwater Menace (starring Patrick Troughton) were purchased by film collector Terry Burnett at a village fete near Southampton in the early 80s.

Over 100 episodes of Doctor Who from the 1960s still remain missing. The tapes were routinely wiped once the rights to repeat them had expired. It seems unfathomable to us today, but before the advent of DVDs and iPlayer, grainy black and white material was thought to no longer be of interest to the television audience. However, many film prints sold overseas have since been returned. These latest discoveries are the first complete episodes to have been located since 2004.
None of the four episodes of the 1965 adventure “Galaxy 4” were known to have survived, although a short extract had been retained.

Research has shown that the returned episodes originated from the ABC channel in Australia. In fact, the copy of The Underwater Menace is still missing a few short sections which were removed by the Australian censors upon its original transmission Down Under. Fresh scans of the missing material have been made by the National Archives of Australia and will be incorporated into the restored episodes ahead of a DVD release.

With thanks to the BBC.

Top Gear Live…

Just had a really good time at Top Gear Live at London’s Excel. Clarkson, Hammond, May and the Stig were all in attendance with specials guest Tiff Needell, Ian Wright and Sabine Schmitz.

Cars, Bikes and some very odd scooter chariots were the order of the day with an Olympic themed show with wheel spins, fire and the silly antics of men who never grew up like me. I loved it and can’t wait for the next show in 2012.

Earlier in the day, the indoor track which hosted drag races and time trials saw a BOWLER off road car go very off road.

While racing Sabine Schmitz the driver hit a barrier and flipped over and rolled. The driver was okay and it certainly added an extra level of excitement to the day which I’m certain they won’t try and repeat.

Great day and a welcome distraction.

The food as ever was amazing but more so the company was great. Having everyone together was so nice and long overdue.

The Excess is killing me…

While being on holiday in Antigua I wanted to write Moliblog and tell everyone about my fantastic time sitting in the sun, consuming Passion Fruit Daiquiri’s daily and eating the equivalent of my body weight in fabulous food and being pampered in paradise. However, I never had the time.

After day 5 the excess became too much. It would appear that you can have too much of a good thing. I would go as far to say that all the excess would actually kill me in the end. I remember thinking that it was strange how I could spend most of the day sleeping and relaxing and still ending up wanting an early night. Maybe that’s what happens now that I’ve reached the big 40.

On that topic I had an amazing birthday, so different to all the others. It started with a great breakfast, then a massage, then swimming in the Caribbean sea, a fantastic creole shrimp salad for lunch followed by more sleeping and catching the beautiful rays. So far so good, then I had an evening meal in the fine dining restaurent and the biggest lobster I’ve every seen. The only thing that worries me, is the fact I get so much pleasure from food. How on earth am I going to lose weight???

I had the pleasure of sharing all this with Fleur who encouraged me to eat Passion Fruit for the first time.

I first I thought it looked like snot but it was more like the strongest hit of orange juice you’ve ever had. Amazing and intense I couldn’t get enough of them.

From the moment we arrived on the island the welcome from the people was just amazing. The site of a 747 parked next to a tiny terminal building was a true indication of the pace for the week ahead. Rarely do passport control welcome you like a hotel reception. Both of which supplied iced fruit juices and a big smile… Apart from the car alarm sounding crickets that are beyond annoying, everything was just perfect and we didn’t really want to come home. I can’t wait to go back.
